Extra schermen aansluiten op je laptop lijkt simpel: kabel erin en klaar. In de praktijk ontstaan problemen juist vaak door de verkeerde kabel of poort. Zeker bij een portable tri-screen monitor, die twee extra schermen tegelijk aanstuurt, is de juiste kabelkeuze cruciaal.

In dit artikel leggen we uit welke kabels nodig zijn, waar het vaak misgaat en hoe je zeker weet dat je setup goed werkt.


Niet elke USB-C-kabel is hetzelfde

USB-C ziet er misschien overal hetzelfde uit, maar functioneel zijn er grote verschillen.

Belangrijk om te weten:

  • ❌ sommige USB-C-kabels zijn alleen voor opladen
  • ❌ andere ondersteunen data, maar geen videosignaal
  • ✅ voor externe schermen heb je USB-C met DisplayPort Alt Mode nodig

Gebruik je een verkeerde kabel, dan blijft je scherm zwart — ook al ondersteunt je laptop het technisch wel.


USB-C (DP Alt Mode): de beste keuze

Voor een tri-screen setup is USB-C met DisplayPort Alt Mode ideaal:

  • beeld en data via één kabel
  • stabiel Full HD-signaal
  • plug & play

Controleer bij twijfel:

  • laptopspecificaties
  • poorticoontjes (bliksemschicht / DP-logo)
  • handleiding van de fabrikant


HDMI: betrouwbaar, maar beperkt

HDMI is nog steeds een veelgebruikte aansluiting, vooral bij zakelijke laptops.

✔️ Voordelen:

  • stabiel beeld
  • breed ondersteund

⚠️ Nadelen:

  • meestal maar één HDMI-poort
  • voor twee schermen vaak combinatie met USB-C nodig

Bij tri-screen monitors wordt HDMI daarom vaak gecombineerd met een tweede aansluiting.


USB-A: alleen als noodoplossing

USB-A kan in sommige configuraties worden gebruikt (bijvoorbeeld in combinatie met HDMI), maar:

  • het is minder efficiënt
  • kan extra instellingen vereisen
  • is niet ideaal voor hoge beeldkwaliteit

Gebruik USB-A vooral als je laptop geen geschikte USB-C-poort heeft.


MacBooks en kabels: extra opletten

Bij MacBooks met M1/M2/M3-chips geldt:

  • de kabel is niet het probleem
  • de chip beperkt het aantal externe schermen

Ook met de juiste kabel kan een extra adapter nodig zijn om twee externe schermen tegelijk te gebruiken.

✔️ Check of je USB-C-poort DP Alt Mode heeft
✔️ Combineer HDMI + USB-C indien nodig
✔️ Vermijd goedkope “oplaad-only” kabels
